The History of October 7
On October 7, 1571, one of the most decisive naval battles in history was fought off the coast of Greece at Lepanto. A Holy League of Christian states faced the Ottoman fleet — vastly outnumbered and outgunned. Pope Pius V asked all Catholics across Europe to pray the Rosary for the Christian fleet.
As the battle raged, the Pope was in Rome leading a procession of the Rosary Confraternity. According to Catholic tradition, at the very moment the Christian fleet achieved a stunning and unexpected victory, he stopped, turned to his companions, and said: "Let us set aside business. Our task is to thank God for the victory He has given the Christian forces."
Pope Pius V instituted the Feast of Our Lady of Victory on that date. Pope Gregory XIII later renamed it the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and it has been celebrated every October 7 in the Catholic Church ever since.
In 1883, Pope Leo XIII — who had a deep personal devotion to the Rosary — dedicated the entire month of October to the Rosary, making October 7 its culminating feast. Today it remains the most important day in the Catholic Rosary calendar.

October 7, 2026 falls on a Wednesday — the traditional day for the Glorious Mysteries. This is especially fitting since the Glorious Mysteries celebrate the Resurrection, Ascension, Pentecost, Assumption and Coronation of Mary — the fullness of God's victory, which the feast of Lepanto echoed in history.
